Keynote Speaker:

Professor Christine Winberg
Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Chris Winberg holds the South African National Research Foundation Chair in Work-integrated Learning and leads the Professional Education Research Institute at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa. Chris’ research focus is professional and vocational education (with a particular focus on engineering education), the professional development of university teachers, and technical communication. She obtained a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Cape Town and lectured in applied linguistics and language education at the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape and at the University of Stockholm in Sweden. From 2010 – 2012, she was chairperson of the South African Association for Applied Linguistics. Chris was the director of the Fundani Centre for Higher Education Development at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology from 2011 – 2015 where she was responsible for supporting curriculum renewal, academic staff development, and for promoting educational research.

Information Literacy in the World of Work, a pilot study in the hospitality industry

Brenda Van Wyk
Head of Library and Information Services at The Independent Institute of Education

Brenda van Wyk is the Head of Library and information Services at The Independent Institute of Education, an internationally accredited private higher education institution. She holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Pretoria. She has experience in library management and the management of library systems in both public and academic libraries. She has been a part-time lecturer at Unisa and The University of Zululand. She managed the implementation of institutional repositories at The University of Zululand as well as The Independent Institute of Education. Her research interests are scholarship curation, institutional repositories, information and knowledge management, digital libraries and digital learning commons.  She has published in several journals and conference proceedings including the 2015 International ETD Conference Proceedings held in India. She has a passion for the library and information world and would like to see digital librarianship reach new heights and increase access to information.

Lucille Webster
Director: Library Services: Durban University of Technology

Ms Webster is the current Director: Library Services at Durban University of Technology. With more than 20 years as a senior manager at academic libraries Lucille is familiar with the academic library and information sector. Her many years of experience has given her in-depth knowledge of the needs of the academic community with regard to information services, research support and other client services.
She has served in leadership positions in the Library and Information sector both nationally and internationally as well as on executive structures of library and information related organizations.  She currently serve on the  Executive Board  of the International Association of University Libraries (IATUL), then Board of the South African National Library and Information Consortium (SANLIC) as well as having served as an Executive member and Chairperson of the Committee of Higher Education Libraries of South Africa (CHELSA).

Mahier Hattas
Director: Field Operations, Statistics South Africa, Western Cape Provincial Office

Mahier Hattas is the Director responsible for all household and economic surveys at Statistics South Africa and is based in the Western Cape Province. He also holds 2 Masters Degrees, from Stellenbosch University and the University of South Africa. His research and work spans across the inter-disciplinary fields of Statistics, Information Systems/Technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the public or private sector spheres. In terms of capacity development, since July 2011, he ensured that the Western Cape Provincial Office has partnered with CPUT on placing 3rd year mathematical science full-time students at the StatsSA’s office. Amongst other responsibilities, he has assisted with numerous projects and programmes cutting across all three spheres of government. For example, he assisted in the design of the National Integrated Social Information System (NISIS) utilizing a dual manual and digital data collection process for household profiling.

Vanessa Wiener
National Statistics System Coordinator: Statistics SA (Stats SA) Western Cape

Mrs Wiener is currently the National Statistic System Coordinator in Western Cape. With more than 15 years’ experience in various occupation within Statistics SA. Her work scope entails effective planning and implementing of communique related to products for Stats SA. Her duties include capacity building and advocacy related to all Stats SA work areas. Other areas of her responsibility include: being a team leader; administrative duties, resources for the NSS component; conduct integrated communication, marketing and publicity for utilization (including stakeholder management, advocacy, and dissemination); coordinate the development and coordination of the national statistical system in SA (including investing in building capacity initiatives). She has a strong footprint within the different levels of government and private and public partners alike. Engaging. Her qualification extend to be being a qualified Educator in the sphere of Basic Education and she currently has her Master’s in Public Administration which she obtained at University of the Western Cape. Her extensive knowledge expands to all scopes of the organisation and she is competent in all datasets accessible to the public at large. Her advocacy and knowledge with her partners supporting them technically with information services, research support and other stakeholder support. She has been involved in various platforms both locally, nationally including with international partners advocating the work that Stats SA embark on.

André Zitzke
Manager - Global Academic Programs, Africa at SAS

André works closely with universities across Africa to promote the development of analytical concepts and skills of learners by providing awareness, resources, training, partnering, and support to global learning institutions to contribute to the development of industry-ready advanced analytics skills. He holds a BSc Hons in Mathematical Statistics from the University of the Free State.

Jeannet Molopyane
Deputy Director - Teaching and Learning Information Services at the University of the Free State Libraries

Jeannet Molopyane is the Deputy Director - Teaching and Learning Information Services at the University of the Free State Libraries. She is responsible for ensuring  that information literacy is integrated with  academic programmes at UFS. She works closely and collaborates with faculties and academics.  Jeannet  has worked as a training librarian at the Central University of Technology offering information literacy and as faculty librarian for Health and Environmental Sciences. She is currently the branch chair of LIASA in the Free State. She holds a Masters degree in Information Science from the University of Pretoria.

Joseph Mangadi
Undergraduate Support and Staff Training Librarian at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Mr Joseph Mangadi is the Undergraduate Support and Staff Training Librarian at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He holds post-graduate qualifications in Library and Information Science as well as in Education. He has worked in various roles in different types of libraries, including academic, public and special libraries. Some of the libraries include an international university based in South Africa, as well as the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

His research interests are Library Client Services, Information Literacy and Curriculum Development. He has presented at the Library and Information Science Association of South Africa (LIASA) conference and pre-conference. He also served in LIASA branch leadership and interest groups positions.

Janine Lockhart
Library Manager for Research Support at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Janine Lockhart has worked in academic libraries for 19 years.  She is currently the Library Manager for Research Support, which includes Research Data Management, various repositories and research support services at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Libraries.  She also manages the Faculty Support Team for the Faculty of Applied Sciences.   Before this, she has worked in the area of Training, Development & Information Literacy at CPUT Libraries. She has a Master’s degree in Business Administration, PGDipLIS from UCT and is a qualified Education, Training and Development Practitioner and Assessor. She is also the chair of the Information Literacy Committee at CPUT. This committee is a sub-committee of the Senate Teaching & Learning Committee.

Siphokazi Princess Gatyeni
SAPUI5 Developer, Zimele Technologies

Siphokazi grew up in Lady Frere, Eastern Cape. In 2011, she was accepted at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology for a 3 year National Diploma in Mathematical Technology. In 2014, she got an opportunity to further my studies in doing BSc Hons in Biomathematics at Stellenbosch University and then 2015 completed her Masters in Mathematics the focus of her thesis was about Mathematical Modelling in Substance Abuse. Currently she is working at Zimele Technologies as SAPUI5 Developer, developing mobile applications.

Simamkele Qwele
Director and founder of Mpumakoloni Youth Initiative

Simamkele is the Director and founder of Mpumakoloni Youth Initiative. An organisation that seeks to bring about change in the lives of South African young people. The organisation is currently focusing on the Eastern Cape Province as it is still building its foundation, with the intention of branching out and establishing changes in the entire South African region. Simamkele prides himself with the organisational objective, which intend to cultivate and perpetuate an interest in education amongst young people in our communities. He has been part of student leadership of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology during his studies of Mathematical Technology, where he was driving his passion of social development that led him to the formation of the organisation. Simamkele an Alumni in the department is also a member of the advisory board in the Faculty of Applied Science, Department of Math and Physics at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Beulah Muller
Associate Director - Knowledge and Information Services, Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)

Beulah started at GIBS nearly 20 years ago as the Information Centre manager tasked with establishing and developing a world-class information centre for an up and coming new business school. She was also a member of the project team responsible for the establishment of GIBS. On her 20 journey, Beulah set-up the GIBS recording studio, iGIBS - a business information portal and GIBSWare – GIBS apparel and bookstore. Prior to joining GIBS, Beulah was Systems Librarian for six years at the then Germiston Public Library where she was responsible for the Technical Services department. She has extensive knowledge and experience in information management, knowledge management, library management and educational space design. She prides herself in her ability to think creatively and critically with ideation as one of her core strengths. Beulah has a keen interest in emerging technologies and their application in problem solving. She holds a M.Com from the University of Johannesburg. Her research focused on the use of quality information for decision making and developing an information fluency framework. Her research afforded her the Top Achiever Award for Research on the MCom. She also attended the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. is passionate about empowering people with the right tools to make them aware of the power of authoritative and quality information.

Ruth Andrews
Manager - Co-curriculum Office, Stellenbosch University

Ruth's current role involves shaping the co-curriculum transcript recognition through creating structures and processes, as well as providing training opportunities for staff and students towards building excellence in the co-curriculum space. Prior to joining Stellenbosch University, Ruth worked at a number of corporate, non-profit and educational institutions such as Rhodes University; Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and Mandela Rhodes Foundation. As a scholarly educational leader, Ruth firmly believes in integrating the scholarship of learning and teaching into the praxis and practice of the co-curriculum at Stellenbosch University. And in doing so, in Colby and Sullivan’s words “develop a discourse that includes character, ethics, values, virtues, meaning-making, feeling and spirituality together with problem solving and critical thinking” as a foundation for leadership formation.
